In 2007 the Kidney Wales Foundation's People Like Us campaign took Wales by storm. It was one of the most successful political and media campaigns of the year putting the lives and needs of kidney patients at centre stage.
By harnessing the individual stories of kidney patients across Wales, the campaign highlighted the issues that mattered to us. It illustrated our struggles on dialysis and what should be done to improve services.
The campaign led to a new Transplant Unit in Cardiff, a rise in the number of organ donors, as well as a major public consultation on whether Wales should introduce a system of presumed consent on organ donation.
Even Health Minister Edwina Hart had praise for the campaign. "(People Like Us) has been an exceptionally responsible campaign that has tried to highlight what practical actions we can take to improve the quality of life of patients with renal problems...the Kidney Wales Foundation has done an excellent job in highlighting these issues to the public and to us as politicians. It is to be commended for that, because that is the role of the voluntary sector."
From the campaign came the idea of the People Like Us Council a forum where patients and healthcare professionals could meet in a non-clinical environment to discuss how to improve renal care further in Wales.
Since the campaign, the Kidney Wales Foundation has been working with patients to find out how to build a patient support resource for kidney patients in Wales.
The result is this site, which we hope will grow into a place where patients and their families feel they can come to share their stories and to find answers to their questions.
